Bureau, 23 September 2026: Odia cinema has achieved a major national honour with ‘Lahari’ winning the Best Odia Film award at the 72nd National Film Awards. The film, directed by Amartya Bhattacharyya and produced by actor-producer Jhilik Bhattacharjee, was presented the Rajat Kamal at the awards ceremony held in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat.

President Droupadi Murmu presented the award at the ceremony on Tuesday, with Bhattacharyya and Bhattacharjee receiving the honour on behalf of the film. The ceremony was held against the backdrop of the Statue of Unity and, for the first time, the National Film Awards ceremony was hosted outside Delhi.

Based on a story rooted in rural Odisha, Lahari explores the lives and struggles of communities caught between tradition and rapid change. The film centres on a rural fisherman and examines family relationships, social change and the challenges faced by indigenous communities amid urbanisation.

The film's distinctive approach also extends to its production. Reports note that Lahari brought together artistes from 15 countries, making it an unusual international collaboration while retaining Odisha's language, cultural identity and storytelling traditions.

For director Amartya Bhattacharyya, the award marks his second National Film Award and his first National Award for an Odia film. Speaking after the announcement, he said the recognition belonged not only to him but to the entire Lahari team and to filmmakers who want to explore independent and unconventional cinema. He also highlighted the film's performances, music and soundscape.

Producer Jhilik Bhattacharjee, meanwhile, described the honour as a deeply emotional milestone. She thanked the film's artistes and technicians and credited Bhattacharyya as a collaborator with whom she had carried the dream of Lahari.

The National Film Awards recognition adds to the film's journey beyond Odisha, with Lahari having also travelled to international film festivals. Its national honour now places another Odisha-rooted story on India's biggest cinematic platform.

'Dahan - The Evil Within' Leads the Horror Genre Released on September 11, the highly anticipated horror thriller 'Dahan - The Evil Within' has been produced under the banner of Amiya Patnaik Productions. Directed, scripted, and written by National Film Award winner Anupam Patnaik, who also co-produced it alongside Barsha Patnaik, the makers claim the film takes Odia horror cinema to the next level following the success of 'Mantramugdha'.

The film features a star-studded cast including Barsha Patnaik, Arosikha Mishra, Samrat Mohapatra, Partha Sarathi Ray, Nishant Majithia, Choudhury Jayaprakash Das, and Pranab Prasanna Rath. New Delhi: Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan underwent plastic surgery after sustaining severe injuries in the attack at his Bandra residence in Mumbai. The doctors at Lilavati Hospital conducted the surgery to treat deep injuries on Saif's spine, hand, and back. Following these medical procedures, Saif is now out of danger and under 24-hour medical supervision.

The prestigious awards were announced on Friday by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, in the presence of feature film jury chairperson Ashutosh Gowarikar and non-feature film jury chairperson P Sheshadri.

Based on writer Shankar Tripathy’s acclaimed Odia novel Nadabindu, Pushkara stars Sabyasachi Mishra and Supriya. Since its release in 2023, the film has garnered widespread praise from both critics and audiences for its compelling storytelling and cinematic brilliance. The recognition at the National Film Awards underscores Subhranshu Das’ successful transition from cinematography to direction, marking a significant milestone for Odia cinema on the national stage.

Renowned Ghoda Nacha Artist Dr. Uchhab Charan Das Passes Away

Bureau (26 February 2026): Eminent Ghoda Nacha artist and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Uchhab Charan Das passed away due to illness at a private hospital in Choudwar, casting a pall of gloom over the cultural fraternity. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2021 for his outstanding contribution to the field of folk art.

Born in Tangimanika village, Dr. Das spent most of his childhood and education years in Choudwar of Cuttack district. His passion for the traditional Ghoda Nacha dance began early in life, and while studying in Class VIII he resolved to dedicate himself to the art form. Throughout his career, he worked tirelessly to ensure Ghoda Nacha gained recognition not only across villages but also at national and international platforms.

After completing his matriculation, Dr. Das established an institution in 1964 to teach Ghoda Nacha. Despite facing severe financial hardship, he remained committed to his artistic mission. To support his family and continue learning the art, he ran a small paan shop while pursuing his studies. The income earned was partly used to finance his training and performances. Although he later received job opportunities, he chose to forgo them to devote himself entirely to Ghoda Nacha.

Besides performing and training students, Dr. Das travelled extensively across districts and outside the state to showcase the art form. He also used Ghoda Nacha as a medium to spread awareness on social issues, including health and social wellbeing, demonstrating the cultural and social relevance of folk traditions.

The demise of the veteran artist has drawn widespread condolences. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep grief over his passing, stating that the contribution of Padma Shri awardee Dr. Uchhab Charan Das in enriching Odisha’s traditional folk culture would always be remembered. He conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family and prayed to Lord Jagannath for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
